Griva Vineyard is located in the Arroyo Seco AVA. The vineyards border both sides of the Arroyo Seco River, for over 7000 feet, and contains many elevation changes. The Franscioni and Griva Family has farmed on the Central Coast since 1868 and purchased what is currently the Griva Vineyard in 1905. The Land has transitioned significantly in agriculture usage over the years with crops ranging from dry land grain to dairy, then to field crops and vegetables, and now to wine grapes. The first vineyard block was planted in 1998 and subsequent blocks have been added each year since that time. Many of these blocks were planted specifically for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, as well as for Bernardus. In recent years Mercy Wines, Martin Ranch and Morgan have sourced fruit from this property. The total vineyard average currently stands at 334 acres. Approximately 75% of the vineyard is planted to Chardonnay (7 clones). In addition many rootstocks were used on this property. The rootstocks were selected based on their compatibility of soil type, proximity to the river and wine grape variety. All of the vineyard soils are Arroyo Seco Loam with more sand, gravel and large stones compared to elsewhere in the AVA, especially the blocks nearest the river.
