about: Arroyo Seco ava
The Arroyo Seco AVA is noted for several extreme characteristics that have a favorable impact on the grapes that are grown in this area. High winds from the cold waters of the Monterey Bay bring in cooler temperatures, as well as dense fog. Soil in this region is well-drained and nutrient poor due to granite and cobblestones that have been washed out of the Santa Lucia Mountains. The water from the Arroyo Seco Creek unifies the arid landscape. Wells in this area have exceptionally low salt levels and ultimately allow for farming in such meager conditions. Much of the appellation is planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but other aromatic white varietals such as Riesling, Gewürztraminer and more recently Sauvignon Musque also thrive in the long growing season. Further, certain pockets of terrain such as Syrah, Merlot, and Grenache.

"The Arroyo Seco Winegrowers Association provides advocacy, marketing and support services to its winery and winegrower members by educating consumers, media and trade audiences on the distinct characteristics of the region in an effort to bring broader awareness to the Arroyo Seco American Viticultural Area. As one of oldest of the nine AVAs within Monterey County, the Arroyo Seco is a cool climate AVA influenced by the Monterey Bay, well-drained rocky soils, extreme winds and experienced growers who have been growing grapes for over 50 years."
